One of the top prospects for this May's bantam draft, Airdrie Extreme AAA bantam forward Ty Rattie, has demolished the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League's single-season record for goals. That record was set last year by Mark Reners of the Lethbridge Golden Hawks, with 61 goals. Rattie is now at 64 goals after 28 games and still has five games to play. He is the runaway league scoring leader by 20 points (!!!!) and will probably be one of the first few players picked come the draft on May 1. Rattie, Saskatchewan forward Brent Benson, and Winnipeg forward Michael St. Croix (who is the son of former NHL goalie Rick St. Croix) are maybe the top three prospects for the draft.
One other note though, while looking over the AMBHL scoring leaders, I spotted a name that rang a bell. 1994-born forward Hunter Shinkaruk of the Calgary Royals is the little guy in this award-winning picture. That's him - at age two - trying to get into the pre-game scrum around the Hitmen net in a game back in 96-97. The picture won Calgary Sun photographer Dave Chidley a Canadian Newspaper Association award for best feature photography in 1997.
