Thursday notes

If you like stats, you will want to check out this post by Tyler Hunnex over at Lets Go Birds. Tyler got the idea of trying to quantify through stats the relationship between a team's average age and their results in the standings. We all know that generally, older teams full of 19 year olds do better than young teams full of 16 & 17 year olds. But how much do teams improve with age? Take a look, it's an interesting read....even if you hate stats.

In WHL action last night...
  • Everett beat Portland and thus take over 2nd place in the U.S. division from the Hawks. The Tips have two games in hand as well.
  • Spokane beat Kamloops 7-0 (Kamloops' worst shutout home ice loss ever) and moved into a tie with Vancouver for 4th in the conference. Although, this is completely meaningless to the first round playoff picture since Vancouver will get the #2 seed even if they're actually 5th in the conference at year's end.
  • Swift Current reeled off their 3rd straight win and are now in sole possession of the #7 playoff spot in the East. What they'd really like is to be in sole possession of the iPlex for the first round of the playoffs, but THAT isn't going to happen....
  • Saskatoon beat Red Deer 8-1 and in the process, clinched a playoff spot. They are the 2nd team in the East to clinch.
  • Calgary scored on their first three shots of the game in beating Prince George 6-1. Cougars starter Hudson Stremmel was yanked after giving up three goals and not making a single save. The Hitmen are now one win (or Raider loss) away from also clinching their playoff spot.

Oh, and back to the Olympic womens hockey tournament topic from yesterday for a moment....the so-called 3rd best team in the world, Sweden, played Canada yesterday. The result? A 13-1 win for Canada. The likely bronze medalist just lost by 12 goals to the eventual gold or silver medalist. It was 10-0 eight minutes into the 2nd period. They just took softball out of the Summer Games for the same uncompetitive reasons....how much longer is women's hockey going to last in the Winter Games....

The debate will be interesting for the IOC on womens hockey. I dont believe it will be out just yet. Most of the sponsors make a ton of money on it in North America and most of the Olympic Sponsors are based here.

Everybody claims you are the godfather of WHL blogs.... I think you are a chump. Your posts are few are far between and they do play hockey south of Kamloops. In fact, Dam good hockey!! Maybe you should get out of the basement, and report and give inside, rather than boring post about playoff points.... C'mon brother!!

Peter - could you give me the address of your blog? Because unless you have an established long lasting blog of your own, you are NOT qualified to judge what Alan does or doesn't do... and by the way damn good hockey is played south of Vancouver... Check out the conference points standings..

Peter - I do this in my free time because I like it...I have a job, a family, and sometimes I don't have time to write anything. I'm sorry if that's an issue for you, but I really don't care if you think it is.

There are other blogs out there that are updated a lot more frequently and have a lot more of the "inside" info you crave. You can start with Gregg Drinnan's blog - there's the REAL "godfather of WHL blogs" there.
