Minor trade

Spokane has acquired depth defenceman Bruin McDonald from the Prince George Cougars for a conditional 2011 6th round bantam draft pick.

I know what you're thinking....my first reaction too was, "somebody wanted a player not named Connolly or Forsberg off the Cougars' 09-10 roster? Really?".

I'm guessing the the conditions on the pick are that McDonald has to be able to stay in the Chiefs lineup past a certain date. The 18 year old McDonald has played 107 games for the Cougars over the last three seasons, including 6 games as a 15 year old in 07-08.

I have to question if anyone would really want to be in PG, last year one prospect I know was removed from his aaa team for a number of reasons, kicked out of school, boozing etc and PG opened the doors and rewarded his one man team wrecking show, so now I'm sure this kid thinks if I party real hard and not go to school in PG then the next reward will be the nhl.

Gee, what an nice thing to say about the other young players.

Anonymous #2, I'm not sure if you're referring to my post, or to the comment left by Anonymous #1.

If it's me, then know that it was a remark in jest, poking some light fun at how bad the Cougars were last year. It's the kind of thing I've said a hundred times before and absolutely not intended to be a condemnation on my part of the players on that 09-10 team.

Some of those players were not good enough to be in the WHL last year - the team's performance is proof of that. But it would take a lot more than being on a bad team to make me seriously cut down some 17 or 18 year old kid.

It is really sad...PG has clearly got a team that cant compete. Poor recruiting is all I can come up with. Some kids get all the breaks and opportunities no matter whether they are good or not, well behaved or not.

Thats too bad because there are alot of players out there that woyld kill for the opportunity to play and they can play at that level.

Prince George is just poorly run team. The young players that go there are good hockey players but when you don't get the ice or the coach sits you all the time it then becomes a mind game and the young player starts to second guess himself and then a whole new can of worms are opened. It is not an easy place for all these kids to be in, some handle it very well and others can't. but a coach can destory a player very quickly

Whaat? PG was a terrible team last year but they're going to be a lot better next year! Their best player, Connolly, was gone almost all last season. He'll be back unless he makes the Lightning, Jesse Forsberg might be an NHL first-rounder this year, Martin Marincin was an NHL second-rounder this past year, and they just traded for a 20-year-old goalie in Morgan Clark. Clark isn't an elite goalie but he's been in the league for 3+ years and is accustomed to seeing a lot of rubber. PG has lately been drafting several players from northern BC and those player are getting developed through the MML team. It looks to me like a decent pipeline. PG should at least be a decent team next year.

Agreed, a coach can destroy a kid in an instant!

Hey...easy on the Toronto Maple Leafs! LOL, but your right!

Midget players aren't the answer. Midget vs 19 and 20 year olds, will get eaten alive, and injured.

Injury...

Out of all the WHL injuries last year. I wonder what the break down was of age?

How many 16 year olds, 17, 18, 19, 20 etc...

Alan??? LOL

Well, that's an interesting idea for sure - proportional to the %'s of each age group in the league, do younger players get hurt more than older players?

The answer could be Yes because they are often smaller and less physically mature than older players. Or it could be No because younger players get less ice time than older players, so fewer opportunities to be injured.

It's an interesting idea. But it's a nearly impossible question for me to figure out an answer to, without access to complete player-by-player injury statistics from last season, something that doesn't exist.

pg has been very bad from the start. i remember sitting down with our head scout at our 1st draft ever, and we were going over our list, when pg owner and head scout sit beside us.we had first pick in the draft, and we already knew who are pick was to be,so we asked them who were they picking, having told them who would pick, the name they gave us left blank stares on our faces, so we asked them if they didnt bouck, they had no idea who he was, truly shocking,i think our faces said everything, they asked for his info and drafted him 2 overall.thats what you get when you fire good scouts and replace them with r c m p guys.
