Rick Rypien dies

Only three months after the too-early death of Derek Boogaard, another former WHLer-turned-NHL-tough-guy has also died. RCMP confirmed tonight that the body of 27 year old Rick Rypien was found at his home in Coleman, Alberta. Foul play is not suspected.

Rypien played 3 years for the Regina Pats, from 2002-03 through 2004-05, then spent the last 6 years in the Vancouver Canucks organization, playing over 100 games in the NHL for the Canucks in that time.

Rypien got into trouble with the NHL last October after grabbing a fan on his way to the dressing room. He was suspended by the NHL and then later by the team for unspecified non-hockey issues, amid speculation Rypien was suffering from mental health issues.

Sadly, whatever his problems, the end result is another tragic death.
