This one comes out of the blue today - the Kootenay Ice abruptly fired head coach Kris Knoblauch this morning. Or, as they put it, "terminated his contract effective immediately".
There had been some speculation in recent weeks that Knoblauch had some interest in the head coaching job at his alma mater, the University of Alberta. If so, perhaps he has landed that job and the Ice are allowing him to leave their bench and take the job.
But the wording of the Ice release is not very friendly....it doesn't give the impression at all that this was a mutual decision. It reads more as a firing than as an "allowed out of contract" situation. So I would have to wonder if perhaps the Ice are unhappy that Knoblauch was pursuing other opportunities while still under contract to coach the Ice for one more year.
