Swift Current and Prince George hooked up on a 1-for-1 trade today and it's the kind of deal you don't see all that often: a straight swap of two very good prospects for each other, before either has really played in the league.
Gone to Prince George from the Broncos is '96 defenceman Zach Gonek. Going the other way from the Cougars to Swift Current is '96 defenceman Jordan Harris. The two players were the first round bantam picks for their respective former teams in the 2011 draft - Harris 10th overall to the Cougars and Gonek three picks later at 13th overall to the Broncos.
Despite being 1st round picks, neither of the two made their respective teams last year as 16 year olds. Both were assigned to midget after training camps; Harris was recalled by the Cougars late in the season and played 17 games for them, but Gonek (who signed with the Broncos in September 2011) has yet to play a game in the WHL.
So why swap two defencemen - similar size, stats, same age, drafted 3 picks apart two years ago, and neither proven anything in the WHL? Well, it sounds like Harris (who's from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) simply wants to play closer to home and this deal is the two teams getting together to make that happen.
