Jackson, Starkov news

The Detroit Red Wings released defenceman Scott Jackson today. Presumably he will rejoin the Seattle Thunderbirds Of Kent-Soon, which means the T-Birds will have a decision to make by October 11 about their overagers. They have forwards Andre Herman and Ian McKenzie and defenceman Benn Olson on the roster already.

In other overage news, Columbus has assigned Kirill Starkov to their AHL affiliate. Red Deer has been hoping to get Starkov back as an overage this season, even going so far as to only pick one new import in the import draft so as to leave room for Starkov's return. NHL teams are getting down to some real cuts now though - the guys who had no hope of making the NHL this year have long since been cut in most cases - and the fact that Starkov has lasted this long may cause the Blue Jackets to think his future lies in the AHL this year instead. In the same vein, it's also bad news for the Rebels that Brett Sutter is STILL with the Flames and Mike Keenan has nothing but nice things to say about the kid's play so far. If Papa Darryl's going to cut him eventually, you gotta think he's going to the AHL and not up north to Uncle Brian.

And another addition now - the Broncos have reassigned 18 year old forward Grant Toulmin to the BCHL's Victoria Grizzlies. Toulmin has played 77 games for the Ponies over the last two years.

And yet another move this afternoon, this one a significant trade. Tri-City sends 18 year old forward Joel Broda to Moose Jaw for 19 year old forward Jason Reese. Not sure what the reasoning behind this deal is except that it moves both players a lot closer to home. They are both players who will get a point-a-game this year so in that regard the deal is a wash. Moose Jaw gets a year younger though.

The Warriors made another move right after that, resolving their overage and goalie situations by releasing Kurt Jory. That leaves them with Joey Perricone and Todd Matthews as their goaltenders, and Perricone, Keith Voytechek, and Terrance Delaronde as their overagers.

The Americans had nine 18-year-olds and three 19-year-olds before the deal. Its probably pretty much a wash since Broda is likely to get drafted and be gone as an overager, so the AMS get a player for two years either way. Reese is probably a bit more polished player at this point and probably has just as much upside in the junior ranks. I wouldn't be surprised if Reese requested to be dealt back to the west coast.
