Another undrafted free agent signing from the WHL, as Portland defenceman Travis Ehrhardt signed a three year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. Ehrhardt was never drafted and was a free agent, but attended Detroit's prospect camp last fall and obviously they liked him enough to sign him now.
This changes Portland's overage plans too since it seems unlikely Ehrhardt will be back to play as a 20 year old now - he is probably destined for the AHL. Ehrhardt would have been a lock for an O/A spot but now the Hawks are probably more likely to end up keeping somebody else like Brock Cornish or Ryan Kerr instead. IMO anyway.
The other bit of news comes from Jeff Hollick's blog, where the Ice broadcaster reports that the Ice have lost a veteran forward. 19 year old Ryan Fox has informed the Ice that he is quitting the WHL and concentrating on his post-secondary education instead. The Ice acquired Fox from the Hitmen in January in a swap for Kris Foucault, a deal which looks like it won't be going down in the books as one of Kootenay's best trades.
Fox could be just one of two players the Ice lose to the halls of higher learning this summer, as potential overage forward Tylan Stephens has (at last word) not made up his mind either about whether to return to the WHL or get started on his plans to become a pilot.
