First, let the will-he-or-won't-he speculation begin in earnest now: Vancouver's Evander Kane has signed a contract with the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers after being picked 4th overall in the draft last month. With that bit of business out of the way, the path is clear now for Kane to stick in the NHL next season should he be sufficiently impressive in training camp in the fall.
Second news item, Gregg Drinnan is reporting that the Hitmen have made their choice for a new head coach, and it is former Winterhawks head coach Mike Williamson. Williamson coached the Winterhawks for seven and a half years from 2000 to 2007, posting five seasons of .500 or better in that span. He was fired after the dismal 06-07 season but the talent pipeline in Portland had run dry by then.
