The season has arrived

It's finally here - the 2011-12 WHL regular season gets underway tonight with the Brandon Wheat Kings paying a visit to the Moose Jaw Warriors. The game, which will also be the first game in Moose Jaw's long-awaited new rink, can be seen (in Canada anyway) on Shaw TV.

10 more teams will start their seasons tomorrow night, while all the rest get underway on Saturday.

By my count, there are currently 13 players still at NHL camps who are expected back in the WHL at some point this year:

Kelowna: Brett Bulmer (Minnesota)
Moose Jaw: Collin Bowman (NY Rangers-AHL), Dylan McIlrath (NY Rangers)
Portland: Riley Boychuk (Buffalo-AHL), Ryan Johansen (Columbus), Joe Morrow (Pittsburgh), Nino Niederreiter (NY Islanders)
Prince Albert: Jonathan Parker (Buffalo-AHL)
Prince George: Brett Connolly (Tampa Bay)
Red Deer: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Edmonton)
Spokane: Darren Kramer (Ottawa)
Tri-City: Matt MacKenzie (Buffalo-AHL)
Vancouver: Brendan Gallagher (Montreal)

Note: by "expected back", I mean that the player is either A) 19 or younger, or B) is 20 but has not signed a pro contract. Obviously the true level of "expected back"-ness of a Niederreiter or an Etem or a Johansen is somewhat in question.

James Martin martin , one of kootenay's undrafted 20 year olds signed a two way deal today with the Flames. Ice are down to three 20's now. Lieuwen, Antilla, and Ismond.

A huge blow to the ICE blue line losing their now, number one defenceman along side Joey Leach.

an even bigger congats to Martin for impressing and making it to the Pro level. Knock 'em dead buddy!
