Congratulations to the Spokane Chiefs and their fans.....they say the 4th win is the hardest but the Chiefs didn't make it look too hard tonight with the clinching win.
The Chiefs winning probably doesn't surprise most observers, but a sweep....that part was definitely a surprise to me. Apart from game three and a few segments of tonight's game, the Chiefs made it look easy. They are definitely the deserving champs. They were #2 overall this year and over the last three rounds of the playoffs, they had to beat the #1, #3, and #5 overall teams.....nobody else in the WHL playoffs had a schedule that hard, and the Chiefs beat them all.
Off to Kitchener and the Memorial Cup for them now. The WHL champion has not won the Memorial Cup since Kootenay in 2002 (Kelowna in 2004 and Vancouver in 2007 won it as the host team, not the WHL champion) but I think the Chiefs have a very, very good chance at winning the Memorial Cup this year, and that's not a homer WHL fan pick. I was very impressed with this team and I think they'll do just fine in the tournament.
My early, early, early picks for the Memorial Cup....
1) Spokane
2) Kitchener
3) Belleville
4) Gatineau/Rouyn-Noranda (Gatineau leads Rouyn-Noranda 3-1 in the QMJHL final series)
As a last note, back-to-back WHL titles for Trevor Glass, and with different teams. Going to have to check the record books to see when the last time somebody did that was.....
