Portland and Medicine Hat make a trade:
Thomas Frazee (17) to Medicine Hat for Tyler Swystun (19) and a 2008 4th round pick.
Makes the Hawks better today while also unloading a player they had off-ice problems with last year. Downside is that they are a lot weaker down the road at forward in the 1990 age group. Two years from now that might hurt them.
Swystun's hockey tour of North America continues. After being a 1st round pick of Prince George, he refused to report and went to Camrose (AJHL) for a year to play for a scholarship instead. Got one and went to Michigan. Played there one year and left, going to Medicine Hat last year after the Cougars traded his rights. Now he's off to Portland. That's four teams in four years and in three different leagues and three different corners of the continent.
He didn't get a lot of ice time last year in Medicine Hat, but should be able to put up good numbers on the first line (I would assume) in Portland for the next couple years. Medicine Hat is obviously hanging their hats on Frazee working through his personal problems and becoming that kind of player too in a year or two. The deal actually surprises me a bit from the Tigers point of view since they have lost a lot of offence from last year plus almost their entire defence and their #1 goaltender too. Thought they might want to hang onto some more of their vets...???
