The WHL exhibition season kicked off last night with the host Prince Albert Raiders taking a 6-5 shootout win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. Scorers for the Warriors were Brad Reige (2), Quinton Howden, Martin Filo and Neal Prokop. Brandon Glover and Todd Matthews split time in net. Glover gave up three goals and Matthews gave up two plus the shootout. Scorers for the Raiders were Brandon Harrod (2), Jorden Iron, Max Brandl, and Kyle Aschim. Iron also scored the shootout winner. David Aime went the distance in net for the Raiders.
Whole bunch of cuts around the league last night:
Everett cut eight.
Prince Albert cut seven.
Regina pared ten.
Fresh off his decision to join the team after all, Brayden Schenn is lighting it up at Brandon's camp. So is Rylan Schwartz, except Schwartz still hasn't committed to the WHL.
Saskatchewan AAA midget league scoring champ Matt Strueby is having a great camp with the Regina Pats. He should be one of the rookies to keep an eye on in the league this year. At 18, he should be able to step in and contribute this year the way Matt Robertson did last year for the Raiders.
Nice profile of Warriors overage candidate Terrance Delaronde. Despite being new to the team himself (he played for Kamloops last year), he has taken one of the new Euros under his wing off the ice. Classy.
Good piece on new Blades O/A's Chris Durand and Michael Kaye. They are both Saskatoon natives, who now return home for their final seasons in the league after playing four years each in other WHL cities. Turns out they are quite familiar with each other from their days as opponents in the Saskatoon minor hockey system....
Article about the Americans' two new Euros. A 6'7" defenceman who doesn't like to fight and says fighting shouldn't be part of the game? Some Ams fans are going to love this guy.
Portland has finally gotten video replay screens installed at Memorial Coliseum. It has been 13 years since they've had replay there; however, fans only missed them for the first 12 years since last year there were no highlights to replay.
