That about sums it up....Finnigan and Matyas were listed at Christmas last year already, while Cheek and Hrynkiw were new names to me.
I understand Cheek has already signed a WHL contract with the Hitmen, so he's on next year's team for sure. Assuming he's good enough of course.
We'll see lots of new faces up front but I think the really interesting actio nwill be with the D-men. We already have two 17yo D (PK and Riss) and we'll need to bring on 2 new faces (I'm assuming that Ash won't be back and that WIlly will be) but can we really bring on two more 16 or 17yo D-men like Schmidt, Roach, Lubin, or Potter? For me the whole approach to the season (are we finally forced to "rebuild" and go much younger than usual or are we going to "reload" and move a young D to get some 18/19yo support).....
Oh, and I know a guy involved with the Okotoks Oilers and he says that Matyas is very good technically but he can be get rattled easy but he's been settling down as he gets older. Sounds like a good listing....
I am assuming that Kosterman, MacKenzie, Rissling, Stebner, and Wilson will be back on the Calgary blueline next year, and that Aschim won't be because they don't need two O/A defencemen and Stebner is the better choice of those two.
As far as the two new guys, I don't think they will both be 16/17. Remember that there's going to be two 18 year olds trying to crack the lineup in Driscoll and Berg; they gave up a 4th round bantam pick for Berg so you can be sure he's going to get every opportunity to make the team. He also has a year's experience in the WHL already with Chilliwack, and will bring some size and toughness to a team that will need some next year. So I think he'll get a real long look.
Assuming one of those two 18 year olds makes it, there's only one more spot to fill, or maybe two spots if they want to keep 8 defencemen on a young team.
Roach was the last rookie defenceman cut last year, losing out to Kosterman and Rissling for a spot. He had a good year in midget so he should be one of the favourites to make the team this year.
Otherwise it's probably between Schmidt and Lubin, I would think.
In net, Hrynkiw is the intriguing prospect for me....he was statistically the #1 goalie in the Saskatchewan AAA midget league last year. It'll be interesting to see if he can push for a job at camp.
Whats with the Hitmen listing/picking up/protecting NCAA players?
Every team in the league has NCAA or NCAA-bound players on their protected list. Has absolutely nothing to do with the Hitmen in particular.
Additional players ? How up to date is this information.
It was accurate when it was posted, in June. It has not been updated since then, and won't be.
I post the prospect lists once a year, in the summer.
I can tell you though that of the players listed here, all of them are still Hitmen property.
