Committed prospects

Here's a little something to go along with those team-by-team prospects reports. While I was posting all those reports, I got an e-mail from a reader who pointed out a very important distinction when it comes to WHL prospects: some of them are committed to the WHL and some of them are not. There are a lot of really good hockey players on those prospects lists who will never see the inside of a WHL arena, because they have no interest in doing so.

The reader wanted to know which players on his teams' list were committed to the WHL. Which ones he had a very good chance of seeing in his teams' colors one day, and which ones were potentially less likely.

So, I've gone down each teams' list and come up with a list of players that as far as I can tell, are committed to the WHL. I used three criteria:

• ever played a game in the WHL
• ever played a preseason game in the WHL
• having signed a WHL education contract

All of those things cause a player to lose his NCAA eligibility, meaning the WHL is his only option unless he is content to play Junior A and nothing higher.

One thing to keep in mind here: not all teams in the WHL are forthcoming with the news of prospect signings. Some teams announce every signing, while some announce none. Given that, some teams below are going to have a lot more names listed than others. That doesn't mean that the teams with few names listed have signed fewer players - only that I/we don't know about many of their signings.

Information about names I have missed is always appreciated! I will try to keep this list up to date.

Lastly, a player only appears on this list if he also appeared on his teams' prospect list and is not currently a roster player of his WHL team.
