I get the info for a lot of these notes from other sources. Guess that makes these notes sloppy seconds.
Hockey Canada will announce the players invited to the World Junior tryout camp this morning at about 10:00 MST. You can check Hockey Canada's website for the list around that time.
In the ECHL, the Augusta Lynx team folded yesterday, 18 games into the season. The league says all the players on the team are now free agents. Presumably this excludes players who are on NHL or AHL contracts and only on loan to the Lynx; those players will have their parent team find them a new place to play. A quick scan of the Lynx roster reveals a few ex-WHLers who may or may not be affected. Justin Keller, Cody Blanshan, Mike Brodeur, Riku Helenius. Helenius is on an NHL deal so he'll be placed somewhere else by the Lightning. The others....they might have to start making some phone calls.
About the Avery/Phaneuf thing....Sean Avery is an attention-starved idiot. But I'm not telling you anything every hockey fan doesn't already know. If Avery had just sat on that comment and said it to Phaneuf on the ice instead, everything would have been fine with the league and he might have even got Phaneuf to take a penalty. But instead he waits until the cameras are on and the microphones are in his face, and then says something publicly that the league can't ignore. It's locker room talk and on-ice trash talk and that's where it has to stay, not be played out in front of the cameras.
Remember when Georges Laraque claimed Avery directed a racial insult at him? The league couldn't prove it. Remember when the Leafs claimed he made fun of Jason Blake's cancer? The league couldn't prove it. Well, the league can prove it this time.
