Winning ugly

Little bit of an ugly game today, not a very dominating performance from Kelowna but they did get the job done in a 6-4 win over Drummondville. Jamie Benn had four goals for the Rockets, one shy of the tournament record for most goals in a game. It would be safe to say though, I think, that neither team will be extremely happy with their performance today. Some soft goals at both ends of the ice and overall not the same level of execution as we saw from the two teams in their opening wins.

With the win, the Rockets have clinched first place in the standings and will definitely play in the final next Sunday, which means they now have five days before their next game of any meaning. They play Windsor tomorrow but the game means nothing to the Rockets apart from a chance to send the champions of the OHL (does it stand for Ordinary Hockey League?) home winless.

The rest of the tournament will unfold thusly:
  • if Kelowna beats Windsor tomorrow, then the playoffs are set. No Thursday tiebreaker will be needed, and Drummondville and Rimouski will play in the semifinal on Friday regardless of who wins their head-to-head game on Wednesday. All that Wednesday game would decide is who is the "home" team on Friday.
  • if Windsor does beat Kelowna, the Rockets still go to the final on Sunday, but the Spitfires would then survive to play a Thursday tiebreaker against whoever loses the Drummondville - Rimouski game on Wednesday. The winner of the Wednesday game would play the winner of the Thursday tiebreaker in Friday's semifinal, with the winner of that game of course advancing to play the Rockets on Sunday.
Windsor is in the position of having to win four straight games now to win the Memorial Cup. They need to beat Kelowna tomorrow, the RIM-DRU loser on Thursday, the RIM-DRU winner on Friday, and Kelowna on Sunday. Good luck with that!

How lucky are we in the Dub? We get to watch the BEST junior loop in the nation. I don't think we have seen the best of the Rockets yet at the Mem Cup. If Guggenburger is even average last night, it's a walk away win!

So far the Q hasn't shown me anything I can get excited over. The OHL, well, how overrated is that league? The only team in recent memory which lived up to its billing was London, and if memory serves me correct I believe they played at home. The way I see it the WHL should be the favourites before the tourney begins and take it from there.

Last year the Kitchner Rangers were pumped up all year and fizzled. They looked ordinary. This year the Windsor Spitfires look more like Hang Gliders....! The BS from the eastern media is nauseating. They don't know dick! I am quite sure if a WHL team went undefeated all year and playoffs, they would still be underdogs when they went down east. This is the league the champions come from.
