Overall the QMJHL clocks in exactly where I expected they would - most of the teams in the QMJHL travel more than any OHL teams but less than most WHL teams. Couple big exceptions though, most notably Cape Breton, who have the distinction of being the most-traveled team in the entire CHL. Yes, they travel 39 more kilometers than Prince George does. And Rouyn-Noranda would be in the WHL's top four as well if they played in that league with that mileage.
Of course these numbers are not written in stone and there are undoubtedly going to be some mistakes made on my part when trying to figure out whether a team stays over in a hotel after a game or returns home, etc, etc. So they are just estimates.....but I used the same approach for all three leagues so if I made mistakes, hopefully I made them equally everywhere.
One thing I did notice about the QMJHL schedules was that, like the OHL, they are very efficient with their road trips. Most teams in the QMJHL do not take the kind of 4 or 5 game road trips we see almost every team in the WHL take once or twice a year. Yes, some QMJHL teams do - but even when they do, it seems to be a Wednesday, Friday-Saturday-Sunday trip and then back home. You see WHL teams spend 8 or 9 days on the road to play 4 or 5 games sometimes. So, the OHL and QMJHL seem to be more efficient in their road trips but perhaps the smaller distances makes that easier.
I gave the longest and shortest distances in the WHL and OHL in earlier posts, so I'd best do it for the "Q" as well: longest driving distance between two cities in the QMJHL is (no surprise) Cape Breton to Rouyn-Noranda, which comes in at 2086 km. Shortest distance is Drummondville to Victoriaville, at 62 km. All distances, for all three leagues, come from Mapquest.
So, to wrap this up and rank the entire CHL.....I've taken the total km and divided it by the number of road games each team plays (to account for the fact that the WHL plays a 72 game schedule while the other two leagues play 68 games) and calculated the average driving distance per road game per team:
| team | league | km | games | avg km/game | |
| 1 | Cape Breton | QMJHL | 29855 | 34 | 878.1 |
| 2 | Prince George | WHL | 29816 | 36 | 828.2 |

When you look at those numbers at the top of the list and you realize that the Cape Bretons and the Prince Georges of the league are driving more than 800 km on average to play each road game....I think it gives us fans another perspective on the level of dedication these players have to the game. These guys are averaging 8 or 9 hours - at least - of bus travel for every three hour road game they play. That's commitment.

While I agree it is difficult for you to track the actual KMs driven due to road trips that last 3 and 4 games .... because of that I don't think you can say that some teams are averaging 8 or 9 hours in the bus per road game. That number is severely skewed by your approach.
From a Q perspective ... Cape Breton for example, will often play a team on back to back nights on the road ... and to suggest that RN could return home between road games on Maritime swing is just wrong (and you know that) and so your "hours in the bus" number is probably way off. On the other hand ... Moncton is more central to most of the Maritime teams and so for a large portion of their road games, they are returning home and not spending the night. There numbers in your analysis are probably closer to the reality.
My numbers don't assume that teams return home after every road game. Of course not. What I did was look at each team's schedule and try to guess whether, after a given game, they would return home or stay on the road.
In the vast majority of cases, I assumed they would stay on the road. So if anything, my numbers are actually too small because there are undoubtedly cases where a team returns home but I had assumed they wouldn't.
About the only time I assumed a team returns home is when their next game is a home game (obviously) or when there were three or four days before the next game.
I'm very familiar with the WHL and the travel habits of the teams in that league because I have been following that league for so long. I'm less familiar with the travel habits of teams in the OHL or QMJHL....I gave it a shot. It's probably not 100% accurate but if somebody who is a fan of those leagues wants to give it a try, I would absolutely defer to their numbers.
I misunderstood your description above ... didn't realize you were going through each schedule and trying to predict their travel itineray ... I withdraw my comment (if I could).
No worries....I probably didn't explain it very well originally either. :)
I don't know how you can arrive with these numbers. I check it and I arrive with this for the QMJHL :
20 143 Victoriaville
20 167 Drummondville
20 307 Baie-Comeau
20 647 Lewiston
20 753 Rimouski
20 822 Québec
21 015 Gatineau
21 158 Montréal
21 620 Moncton
21 836 Shawinigan
22 279 Saint John
22 677 Chicoutimi
23 945 Val d'Or
24 093 Bathurst
24 319 PEI
24 779 Halifax
27 262 Rouyn-Noranda
31 853 Cape Breton
Well, it's not an exact science. Without knowing the specific itineraries of each team, there's a lot of guesswork involved in figuring where a team will travel after each game. Is it to the next road city, or is it back home first?
I am not extremely familiar with the travel habits of teams in the QMJHL, so my guesswork is probably not as accurate as that of somebody who follows that league closely. If that describes you, then it's highly likely that your numbers are more accurate than mine.
