The WHL championship series gets underway in Calgary tonight with game 1 between the Hitmen and the Tri-City Americans. At stake is the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a trip to Brandon to be the WHL rep at the Memorial Cup starting May 14.
Speaking of the Memorial Cup, the OHL's Windsor Spitfires have a 2-0 lead over the Barrie Colts in the OHL championship series. The QMJHL championship, between Saint John and Moncton, gets underway tonight just like the WHL series. Incidentally, this is the first time in the QMJHL's 30-plus year history that the league final does not feature at least one team from the league's namesake province of Quebec.
And one big bit of news out of the WHL yesterday that was not draft-related - the Medicine Hat Tigers received a commitment for next season from NCAA (Minnesota State) forward Tyler Pitlick, who will leave school to join the Tigers. Pitlick will be 19 next year and is expected to be a first round pick in this June's NHL draft, so adding him for next season should give the Tigers' offence a big boost.
