Wednesday notes

Calgary and Vancouver won last night to take 2-1 leads in the WHL semi-final series.....kind of a wacky game in Brandon, where Calgary lead 4-0 after the first period, then gave up three shorthanded goals in the second period to the same player, on three different penalties. They weren't able to complete the comeback in the third period though so the Hitmen won 6-3 despite being outshot 2-1 by the Wheat Kings.

Matt Calvert's three shorthanded goals (a shorthanded natural hat trick!) has to have set some WHL records though......some playoff records at least. Shorthanded goals are the rarest of the three kinds of goals, and rarer still are games where a player gets more than one. To get three, and all in one period....gotta be some records set there. Too bad the WHL record book on their website doesn't list such feats for the playoffs.

If this were football, the Hitmen would have been declining the penalties after the 2nd Calvert goal....

At the Telus Cup, the Notre Dame Hounds tied Collège Antoine-Girouard 2-2 yesterday, and the tie is good enough to give the Hounds a share of first place after two games of the five game round-robin. And as I mentioned yesterday, Red Deer is 0-2 now so they have to win their last three games if they want to make the playoff round.

I see Vancouver is in the conference final for the 4th time in 5 years and Calgary is in the conference final for the 4th staight year. My congratulations to these 2 clubs but I can't help but wonder if the WHL is suffering from the same problem MLB has with the Yankees and Red Sox,etc. A few clubs with unlimited resources simply overwhelm many if not most of the others. Does anyone else see this as an issue? If so, can anything be done? Should anything be done?
