The Canadian U-18 team - with its 7 WHLers - is in danger of missing the medal round at the World U-18 championships in Belarus.
After losing to Switzerland 3-1 in their opener, the Canadians hammered the host Belorussians 11-3 yesterday but today they lost 5-0 to the USA. With one round-robin game left to play, the 1-2 Canadian team finds itself in the position of having to post a better result Sunday against Sweden (who are 3-0) than the Swiss do against Belarus tomorrow, in order to make the medal round. A Swiss regulation win over Belarus makes the game against Sweden meaningless.
Canada always struggles to do well at this tournament because many of their best players are still playing in the CHL playoffs and are unavailable to play. But missing the medal round and having to compete with the likes of Belarus and Latvia to avoid relegation is extra embarrassing.
