Updated: Most successful franchises

Last summer I did a post about who were the most successful WHL franchises over the last five years. I got a request last week to update that with the past year's results, and here we are.

As with last year, I am defining "success" by the number of playoff series a team has won; I think that's a fairly reasonable barometer to use since a team that finishes first overall in the regular season but bombs out in the first round of the playoffs did not have a "successful" year by anyone's standards, while a team that just squeaked into the playoffs in 8th spot but won the title certainly did have a successful year.

So, here's how everyone has done in the last five years, ordered by playoff series wins:

Clear gap at the top, with Vancouver and Calgary having 12 series wins apiece, and then a drop-off down to the next team with 8.

At the bottom, there's five teams who haven't won a series at all in the last five years. We can probably cut Chilliwack and Edmonton a little bit of slack since they haven't even been in the league for all of those years. But, Kamloops, Red Deer, and Prince Albert have....and Prince Albert has even missed the playoffs for four of those five years.

wow Kootenay seems more successful than where they ended up on that list... i know the list is 100% accurate but the Ice come across as a top team each season in my mind.

maybe some of their fans whining actually have a point here? lol. they place pretty badly for sure for how much of a constant pain in the as$ they are to play.

Kootenay can't turn regular season success into playoff success...

Anonymous #3 beat me to it - Kootenay seems like a more successful franchise than they are, because they have had a lot of regular season success in those five years.

The Ice have averaged 92 points in the regular season over the last five seasons - that's probably in the top five in the league for that. But they have only won one playoff series in that time, and lost to a lower-seeded team in the first round two of those years.

So, regular season success they have done very well with. But not playoff success.

any rumors on who their next coach may be now that Hamilton is signed with the Oil Kings? I havent seen a thing any where on them>

The coach will be someone that works cheap. Chenny needs to pocket his share.

I would still trade the last 5 winters of Raider hockey for the last 5 winters of Ice hockey. If it is any consolation my Raiders have just missed the eastern conference playoffs the last few years and it is harder to make the playoffs in the east (8 out of 12 get in) compared to the west (8 out of 10 get in.........not much consolation I do admit....oh well next year is almost here.

i have heard that the Ice have only interviewed TWO people, and one is apparently getting the job. no names who they are, but TWO? COME ON MAN are we serious here? what a joke Chynoweth is starting to become.

Also heard that its not a priority here right now that he has to get his kids ready for school ect. Dont you have a wife?

I would think taht running a community based Multi million dollar business would be a huge priority all season long.

So... No trades
No Drafting now!
and no coaches being hired.

All equals out to: no banners, no real team, no playoff sucess, no city interest in the team as we never get press releases or news of ANY SORT. Oh and no marketing worth a shit!

never any news for the fans.

Just plain damn frustrating being a fan here..

Just horseshit

I heard that hamilton was offered the job there but turned it down and went to the Oil kings instead. Probly more money as an assitant there than head coach in kootenay. haha.

Chenowyth was banking on his acceptance and didnt feel the need to interview more guys. what a moron.

Moose Jaw listed a 16 year old from Parksville BC named Travis Flug who attented their traing camp
