Exhibition season is over now, and the regular season starts Thursday for two teams, Friday for most teams, and Saturday for a few teams. So, look for a fair number of cuts to be coming from most teams in the league this week as they pare down to something close to their eventual regular season roster.
Some cuts will also depend on the return of players who are currently at NHL camps. NHL teams usually have most junior-bound players returned to their junior teams by the start of the CHL seasons but guys they want to get a longer look at or put into some exhibition games, we're not going to see those kids back in time for the WHL season to start.
Not a whole lot in the papers this morning from what I can see. The few notes I did rustle up....
Saskatoon's Mike Reich might start the season in the press box with a suspension from the league. He was kicked out of the Blades' last preseason game yesterday with a match penalty after being caught gouging Regina defenceman Victor Bartley's eye during a scrum. Reich pleads innocent but the refs must have seen something to give him the match penalty.
And another overage note, the Broncos' Jesse Dudas was injured last night playing for the Edmonton Oilers rookies in a preseason NHL tilt. Wow, Dudas injured.....that has never happened before! No word on how seriously he was hurt (knee or ankle injury according to the Edmonton paper) but Dudas has sat out probably half his WHL career with injuries.
