Wednesday notes

We're just eight days now from the opening of the regular season, which starts next Thursday with a clash between the Ice and Chiefs in Cranbrook. Teams continue making a few cuts here and there, and I'm keeping the rosters updated as best as I can.

One interesting note, Portland made some cuts yesterday which gets the team down to just 13 forwards - but two of those, Ryan Andersen and Jason Grecica, are injured and will not be ready for the start of the season. They do still have 10 defencemen though so either they plan to start the season dressing 7 defencemen and 11 forwards, or there is the potential there for a D-for-F trade for the Hawks in the next week.

I've also started writing my annual season previews now, which I hope to post starting next week, maybe one division per day leading up to the season's start on Thursday. As always, it's really easy to pick 3-4 teams who should be very good this year and it's easy to pick 3-4 teams who should be weak this year, but the other 14-16 teams, sometimes you might as well pick the names out of a hat when trying to place them....

News has been slow the last few days.....do training camps have dog days? Here's the few items that can be gleaned from today's papers....

The Raiders and Tigers played the Tony Aasman benefit game last night, and Aasman loved every minute of it.

Edmonton wants to build on the modest successes of their inaugural season, shunning the "expansion franchise" excuse.

Vancouver sophomore defenceman Neil Manning really, really hates Big Bird and all things yellow.
