Let the second-guessing begin in Saskatoon. The Blades are built more for 09-10 than for this season but any time you finish as high as they did, surely anything less than at least two playoff rounds is a big disappointment. They didn't make any moves at the trade deadline, something that surprised a number of observers who thought they might go after one of the vets that were available. Would it have made a difference?
Anyway, the second round matchups in the East will be Lethbridge against Calgary, and Medicine Hat against Brandon. Both series will have unconventional formats due to arena availability issues in Calgary and Brandon. The Hitmen-Hurricanes series will play a 2-3-2 format, while the Brandon-Hat series will go 2-3-1-1, with the first two games in Medicine Hat and then the next three in Brandon.
Shaw also confirmed tonight that their choice for a 2nd round series to televise will indeed be Vancouver against Spokane, as we have speculated for a few days now.
My previews of the 2nd round series, and predictions, will be posted tomorrow. For what it's worth, I was 7-1 on my first round picks. The one I got wrong was tonight's.....I picked the Blades to beat the Hurricanes in six instead.
