Olympic news

Not hockey related, but this story caught my eye as one of the stupidest ideas in the sporting world in a while.

Basically, the international rowing federation wants to limit the number of rowing events each country can enter at the next Olympics, so that smaller countries have a chance to enter some of the races. Their proposal would limit the powerhouse rowing countries (such as Britain, Australia, Canada, USA, etc) to enter just 10 of the 14 rowing events on the Olympic schedule.

Huh? I thought the Olympics were about the world's best athletes competing against one another. But if say, Australia has a medal threat in every event, they have to tell four of those events' athletes that they're not going to get to compete so that some hopeless hopeful from sub-Saharan Africa can compete instead.

Let's expand this to other sports too. Hey, Michael Phelps: you're too good, so next Olympics you can only compete in four races. We want some guy who almost drowned in qualifying to have your spot instead.
